Scholarship for Champions

Eight Houston-area high school athletes have been awarded $5,000 scholarships through Reliant Energy's Scholarship for Champions—Powering Strong Minds and Bodies program.

Scholarship for Champions recipients are selected based on excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, ethics and community involvement. Reliant Energy is proud to recognize this year's winners and wishes them all the best in their college careers.

  • TAYLOR BOSTON

    Taylor is captain of the C.E. King High School varsity track team and co-captain of the varsity volleyball team. She's a class officer and is active with the Future Business Leaders of America, the National Honor Society and Mademoiselles Service and Social Club. Taylor also delivers holiday food baskets, works at local women and children's shelters and collects donations for various nonprofit organizations.

  • AMY BREWER

    A varsity letterman and two-season MVP for the Goose Creek Memorial tennis team, Amy is involved in Student Council, the Interact Club, the National Honor Society and the Key Club. She also participated in the cleanup of Hurricane Rita and volunteers several hours a week for a kids' after-school program.

  • ERIKA CHIN

    Erika is a three-year starting letterman for the Cinco Ranch High School volleyball team and was chosen as Offensive Player of the Year in 2008. She's very involved in her community, raising funds for the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure, teaching Sunday school and volunteering for the Katy Pioneer Day Charity Fair and school garage sale.

  • MARVIN ESPINOZA

    Marvin is the team captain for the Morton Ranch varsity cross country team and a member of the varsity track and field team. He's a member of the National Honor Society and participates in the UIL Social Studies competition. Marvin is also active in his community, volunteering his time to the Texas Wildlife Rehabilitation Center and Goodwill Industries.

  • JONATHON FISHER

    Jonathon is a First-Team All-District linebacker and team captain for the Katy High School football team and a member of the varsity track team. He serves as a DARE role model, a PEER mentor, a Peer Assistance Leader and a National Honor Society member. Jonathon also coaches at football camps and volunteers to help adults with Alzheimer's and functional disabilities.

  • KRISTEN HOLYFIELD

    Kristen is a varsity letterman and team captain of the Houston Christian High School volleyball team and for the past two years has served on the Athletic Leadership Council. She volunteers for a wide range of causes, including a local elementary school, Habitat for Humanity, the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the Houston Food Bank and Goodwill Industries.

  • GRACE LIU

    A member of the Kempner High School varsity volleyball and swim team, Grace was the secretary of her class in 2008-2009 and now serves as Senior Class President. She also coaches community volleyball and swim teams and volunteers her time for Juvenile Diabetes, the Fort Bend County Libraries, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

  • JONATHAN PUFFER

    A two-year varsity letterman on the James E. Taylor football team and member of the track and field team, Jonathan also mentors younger student athletes and serves as a Peer Assistance Leader, a member of the National Honor Society and a student Bible leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was selected by his coaches and peers to represent the football team on the Leadership Council.
